Welcome to Bloomberg Law’s Wake Up Call, a daily rundown of the top news for lawyers, law firms, and in-house counsel.
- American Bar Association President William Bay in an interview warned against the Trump administration’s attacks on the legal industry and judicial independence. He said the administration’s efforts threaten due process, free speech, and the right to counsel. (NPR)
- Former Duane Morris partner Adam Beckerink was arrested on an outstanding Michigan warrant related to domestic abuse and assaulting police officers. The warrant stemmed from incidents at the home of his late wife, who was found dead in their building’s stairwell. Beckerink has not been charged with her death, but was referred to as a suspect by the prosecutor. (ABA Journal) Wake Up Call previously covered Beckerink’s dismissal from Duane Morris.
- Dutch DJ Tiesto’s former tax attorney, Frank Butselaar, is facing federal prosecution for orchestrating an illegal offshore tax shelter scheme that saved Tiesto $28 million in US taxes. While Tiesto was not accused of wrongdoing and has voluntarily paid $9.4 million, prosecutors are seeking $19 million in restitution from Butselaar, who is currently serving a 30-month prison sentence.
