Biomet Appeals $3.65 Million Judgment in Hip Implant Lawsuit

Biomet Inc. is appealing to the Eighth Circuit after an Iowa federal court upheld a $3.55 million verdict to a woman who alleged she suffered injury from her Biomet M2a-Magnum hip prosthesis.

Lori Nicholson, who had corrective surgery in 2012 to replace the Biomet device, was awarded $1.05 million in compensatory damages and $2.5 million in punitives in November 2020.

Nicholson’s evidence supported the jury finding that the device was defectively designed and a reasonable safer alternative was available when she had her left hip replaced in 2007, the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Iowa said last ...
