Apple Wins Partial Invalidation of Fintiv QR Payment Patent

Apple Inc. persuaded an administrative tribunal to cancel the majority of a Fintiv Inc. patent covering a system for processing payments with a scannable QR code.

The Patent Trial and Appeal Board canceled 18 claims of Fintiv’s US Patent No. 9,189,785 due to obviousness, but determined three claims concerning the time at which a payment is initiated were patentable, according to a decision issued Tuesday. The ‘785 patent is titled “Debit network routing selection using a scannable code.”
