FERC Nominees Grilled on Independence Under Trump Administration

Two Federal Energy Regulatory Commission nominees faced questions during a Senate committee hearing Thursday regarding preserving the agency’s independence in light of recent White House firings of prominent federal officials.

President Donald Trump nominated Laura Swett from Vinson & Elkins LLP in June to replace Republican FERC Chair Mark Christie. Trump in July also nominated David LaCerte to replace former Democratic commissioner Willie L. Phillips, who served as FERC chair during the Biden administration and resigned after being asked by the White House to leave.
