Minimum Wage, Mandatory Leave Hikes Reversed by Michigan Court

A minimum wage spike and expansion of mandatory paid leave, set to take effect in February, were overturned by a Michigan Court of Appeals panel Thursday, teeing up negotiations between industry and state Democratic leaders.

The unanimous ruling eliminated impending employee benefits increases that the business community—especially the hospitality industry—called a “sea change.”

The three-judge panel reversed a lower court ruling that held the GOP-controlled 2018 state Legislature improperly slashed worker benefits after politicians adopted two benefits bills in the same legislative session in order to keep the proposed expansions off the 2018 ballot.
