Michigan Republicans Shrink Leave Benefits, Minimum Wage Hike

Michigan Republicans have pared back mandatory sick leave benefits and delayed a minimum wage increase in an unprecedented lame duck legislative maneuver.

Gov. Rick Snyder (R) signed two bills Dec. 14 that reversed course on laws the Republican-majority general assembly passed in September, in a process called “adopt and amend.” The maneuver allowed the Legislature to adopt pro-worker ballot initiatives before they received approval in the statewide November vote—a move that allowed them to pare back the laws after the election.
