Wake Up Call: Pro Bono Bootcamp Helps Power the Climate Movement

April 3, 2025, 11:00 AM UTC

Welcome to Bloomberg Law’s Wake Up Call, a daily rundown of the top news for lawyers, law firms, and in-house counsel.

  • The Climate Pro Bono Bootcamp is a virtual event aimed at getting more lawyers involved in climate work—not just through lawsuits, but by offering legal help with contracts, business formation, and other needs. The bootcamp started in 2024 with 700 participants, far exceeding expectations. Now, they’re aiming even higher: breaking a Guinness World Record for the largest online legal conference. (Grist)
  • The granddaughters of former Paul Weiss partner and US District Court for the Southern District of New York Judge Simon Rifkind publicly rebuked Paul Weiss chairman Brad Karp for striking a deal with the Trump administration that they believe compromised the firm’s integrity. In a letter to Karp, the sisters, both lawyers, took particular issue with Karp invoking their grandfather’s principles to justify the decision, arguing that he would have seen the firm’s duty as defending the rule of law, not self-preservation. (The New York Times)
  • The LAPD’s top civilian lawyer was removed from her post following intense criticism over her role in the release of thousands of officer photos under public records law. Lizabeth Rhodes, a former federal prosecutor, was both praised for her legal oversight and blamed by the police union for policies they argued endangered officers. (Los Angeles Times)
