Hinshaw Acquires 23-Lawyer Chicago Firm for Aviation Practice

March 9, 2023, 7:51 PM UTC

Hinshaw & Culbertson is acquiring fellow Chicago firm Adler Murphy & McQuillen and its 23 lawyers to form an aviation and aerospace practice.

Adler Murphy in its 28-year history has represented airlines, aircraft and engine manufacturers, airports and aviation insurance carriers. Clients have included American Airlines Group Inc., United Airlines Holdings Inc. and Frontier Group Holdings Inc.

“Their depth, experience, and reputation in the aviation and professional liability industries sealed the deal for us,” Hinshaw & Culbertson Chairman Peter Sullivan said in a statement.

The acquisition, effective April 1, is the latest in a string of mergers this year. Holland & Knight said it will be combining with Nashville-founded Waller Lansden Dortch & Davis; Morrison & Foerster announced its acquisition of litigation boutique Durie Tangri; and Orrick, Herrington & Sutcliffe will be merging with Washington’s Buckley.

Michael McQuillen, John Kelly and Paula Wegman, who each are joining from Adler Murphy, will lead the new aviation practice at Hinshaw, which was founded in 1934 and has more than 400 lawyers in 24 US offices.

“The synergies between our two firms—including our robust litigation defense practices—made this move a perfect marriage,” Sullivan said.

Hinshaw was ranked 162nd in American Lawyer’s 2022 survey, with revenues of $191 million.
