Top Aide to Ousted Boston US Attorney Tapped to Replace Her

The White House plans to nominate the former first assistant US attorney in Massachusetts to run the Boston office after his predecessor resigned amid scandal.

Joshua Levy, who’s been acting US attorney in Boston since Rachael Rollins stepped down in May, was cast in a Justice Department internal watchdog report as a force attempting to stop his then-boss’s multiple ethics lapses and policy violations.

The former Ropes & Gray partner, brought on to support Rollins after her confirmation as Boston’s first Black female US attorney, will succeed her—without the acting title—if confirmed by the Senate.

The White House announced President Joe Biden’s intent to select Levy on Wednesday.

Levy returned to the Massachusetts district in January 2022 after previously serving as a line prosecutor in the office from 1997 to 2004.

Rollins stepped down a day before the IG report’s publication. The investigation documented instances in which Levy, as her chief adviser, tried—sometimes successfully—to stop her conduct. That included Levy rejecting her request for him to write a letter creating the impression that a political rival to a Rollins ally was under federal investigation.

Biden also announced plans to nominate Johnny Gogo, a judge with the Superior Court of California, to be US attorney for the districts of Guam and Northern Mariana Islands.
