Dartmouth Refuses to Bargain With Unionized Basketball Team (1)

Dartmouth College rejected a request by the newly-unionized men’s basketball team to begin bargaining for a labor contract, indicating it plans to take the dispute over the students’ employment status to federal court.

Dartmouth spokesperson Jana Barnello said Monday that the college would defy any National Labor Relations Board order requiring it to bargain with the union, the nation’s first for college athletes. The Ivy League school’s appeal of an NLRB regional director’s decision classifying the athletes as employees is pending before the full board.
