Tesla $6 Million Solar Roof Price-Hike Deal Rejected by Judge

Tesla Inc. and homeowners who alleged it ran a bait-and-switch with rooftop solar panel prices must provide more information about their $6 million class settlement, a federal judge said in rejecting the deal for now.

In 2016, Tesla introduced a solar panel that looked like a tiled roof, rather than the typical photovoltaic panel. Matthew Amans and Babek Malek alleged the company lured customers into contracts with a low initial cost but hiked the prices in April 2021. Amans’ contract price jumped from $71,000 to around $146,000, and Malek’s increased from $64,000 to about $91,000, they said.
