Timeline for California Kids’ Online Privacy Law Extended

California officials will have more time to establish the first-in-the-nation online children’s privacy law under changes implemented this week in the state legislature, according to staff from the California Privacy Protection Agency.

The California Age-Appropriate Design Code Act was enacted last year to require businesses to implement higher online safety and privacy defaults for children beginning July 2024. Companies must consider whether their product or service could hurt children by exposing them to “harmful, or potentially harmful” content.

The law is currently facing a court challenge from tech groups, with a hearing set later this month.
