Business Groups Ask New Jersey To Narrow Data Broker Definition

Technology and advertising trade groups are urging the New Jersey Division of Consumer Affairs to tighten the definition of data broker in final rules for a privacy law that went into effect this year.

The New Jersey Data Privacy Act, which went into effect Jan. 15, grants consumers expanded rights regarding their personal data, including biometrics and other sensitive information. Violators risk penalties of up to $10,000 for the first violation and fines of up to $20,000 for subsequent violations.
