A West Virginia law barring transgender girl athletes from participating on sports teams consistent with their gender identity violates Title IX, as applied to a 13-year-old transgender girl, the Fourth Circuit ruled Tuesday.

The law, which was enacted in April 2021 and took effect in July 2021, is part of an effort by conservative legislators and attorneys to challenge the right of transgender athletes to participate in girls’ and women’s sports.
