West Virginia Transgender Athlete Ban Challenged by 11-Year-Old

An 11-year old transgender girl sued West Virginia in federal court Wednesday seeking to topple the state’s new law barring transgender girls from participating in school sports consistent with their gender identity.

The plaintiff, identified as B.P.G., is set to start middle school in the fall, where she hopes to participate on the girls’ cross-country and track teams, according to the complaint filed in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of West Virginia.

But the law, enacted in April 2021, will preclude her from doing so when it becomes effective on July 8, 2021, the complaint alleges.
