A high stakes industry-backed initiative governing the classification status of Uber Technologies Inc. and Lyft Inc. drivers is in the hands of Massachusetts’ highest court after a voter coalition sued Thursday to block some questions from appearing on the 2024 ballot.

A coalition of registered voters filed a complaint with the Supreme Judicial Court over five industry-backed proposals that would ensure app-based drivers remain designated as independent contractors, a status that denies them some legal protections and labor rights.
