South Carolina’s Top Court Won’t Rehear Abortion Ban Suit (1)

The South Carolina Supreme Court announced Tuesday that it won’t reconsider a decision saying that a law that bans abortions after about six weeks is valid.

Planned Parenthood South Atlantic, the Greenville Woman’s Clinic, and two physicians requested a rehearing Aug. 23 based on an ambiguity in the definition of “fetal heartbeat” found in a law approved a day earlier by the South Carolina Supreme Court. The plaintiffs said the latest decision represented a departure from a January ruling in which the court said that a nearly identical six-week ban violated the right of privacy guaranteed by the state constitution. ...
