US Department of Homeland Security agents were ordered to stop using excessive force against peaceful crowds of protesters and press outside a Portland, Ore., immigration facility.
“In a well-functioning constitutional democratic republic, free speech, courageous newsgathering, and nonviolent protest are all permitted, respected, and even celebrated,” Judge Michael H. Simon said Monday. “In an authoritarian regime, that is not the case.”
“Our nation is now at a crossroads,” the judge wrote in an order issuing a preliminary injunction after granting a temporary restraining order last month.
