Paxton Seeks DOJ Correspondence on Musk $1 Million Voter Prizes

A warning to Elon Musk from the Justice Department about $1 million in daily prizes the billionaire’s pro-Trump political group is handing swing-state voters has drawn the attention of Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton (R).

Paxton, who also supports Trump, said he made a public records request on Thursday for DOJ documents related to actions taken against Musk and his group, America PAC.

Musk’s group announced over the weekend that it would use a lottery system to award $1 million each day until the Nov. 5 election to a registered voter who signs a petition supporting free speech and the right to bear arms. Eligibility is limited to voters in seven swing states — Wisconsin, Michigan, Pennsylvania, North Carolina, Georgia, Arizona, and Nevada.

The written request, which Paxton’s office shared publicly, seeks copies of all correspondence the Justice Department has received regarding Musk’s “Petition in Favor of Free Speech and the Right to Bear Arms.”

Paxton also wants a copy of any communications between the Justice Department and Musk’s PAC, including a letter the DOJ’s public integrity unit sent the group about the petition on Wednesday.

Paxton asked for the records within 10 business days, as required by law. They are due on Nov. 7, two days after the election.

The records request comes days after Paxton sued the Biden administration for allegedly violating a federal law requiring assistance to Texas to verify the citizenship status of 450,000 registered voters whose eligibility Paxton has questioned.
