Interior Department’s Slavery Exhibit Removals Probed by Court

The Trump administration on Tuesday fielded questions from Third Circuit judges on the scope of its discretion to remove references to slavery at a historic site in Philadelphia.

The city in its lawsuit claimed the National Park Service removed materials referencing slavery from the President’s House—which commemorates the first official presidential residence and the people who lived there, including slaves—without notice in January. The case is one of several challenging decisions by the Trump administration to remove informational displays at national parks and other historic sites that detail the history of slavery and gay rights in the US.
