Illinois state Sen. Emil Jones III (D) has entered into a deferred-prosecution agreement, averting a retrial on federal bribery charges that was scheduled for next month.
Jones, whose first trial ended in a hung jury earlier this year, must pay a $6,800 fine, refrain from owning firearms and stay out of legal trouble for a 12-month period, after which the charges against him will be dismissed, according to the agreement.
As part of the deal, Jones acknowledged making a “materially false” statement to FBI agents investigating corruption in the red-light camera industry.
