DOJ Says Denver’s Semiautomatic Weapons Ban Is Unconstitutional

The Trump administration mounted a constitutional challenge Tuesday against Denver’s ban on possessing, manufacturing, or selling assault-style firearms.

The city’s law is at odds with US Supreme Court precedent established in N.Y. State Rifle & Pistol Ass’n v. Bruen, which requires historical analogues to support laws implicating the Second Amendment, the Justice Department said in a complaint filed in the US District Court for the District of Colorado.

The Trump administration has brought several suits over allegedly unconstitutional gun regulations, including against Los Angeles, the US Virgin Islands, and Washington, DC. Those cases are all pending. ...
