US Department of Homeland Security policies authorizing warrantless searches and seizures of Americans’ electronic devices at the border violate the Fourth Amendment, a lawsuit filed Wednesday asserts.

Wilmer Chavarria was detained for hours in July at a Houston airport for “no given reason” until he eventually complied with federal agents’ demands to provide them the passwords to access his laptop, phone, and tablet, he alleged in a complaint filed in the US District Court for the District of Columbia.
