Border Patrol’s California Stops and Arrests Limited by Judge

The US Border Patrol’s efforts to speed Trump administration deportation efforts in the agricultural heart of California were limited Tuesday, after a California federal judge issued a preliminary injunction enforcing due process guardrails on stops and arrests.

The workers who sued after agents in January swept predominantly Latino communities in Bakersfield, Calif., “based on assumptions about their race or occupation,” arresting 78, are likely to succeed in arguing that Border Patrol agents’ “pattern and practice” violates Californians’ constitutional protections, said Judge Jennifer L. Thurston of the US District Court for the Eastern District of California.
