Tesla, Matthews Battery Invention Suit Sent to Arbitration (1)

Battery supplier Matthews International Corp. convinced a California federal judge to send Tesla Inc.’s lawsuit over the inventor status of a battery component to arbitration.

Judge Edward J. Davila granted Matthews’ motion to compel arbitration and stayed the dispute pending resolution, according to a Thursday docket entry in the US District Court for the Northern District of California.

Tesla sued Matthews in February, alleging the company broke their contract by denying the automaker inventor status for a manufacturing method for a dry battery electrode, a component of a battery manufactured without using traditional wet, solvent-based processes.
