OpenAI Appeals Order Barring ‘io’ Name in Trademark Lawsuit

OpenAI Inc. asked an appellate court to review a California judge’s order temporarily prohibiting it from using the “io” moniker after AI device developer IYO Inc. accused the company of trademark infringement.

OpenAI and io Products Inc., an AI hardware startup OpenAI acquired for $6.5 billion in May, filed a notice of appeal Thursday in the US District Court for the Northern District of California. The company’s seeking Ninth Circuit review of the California court’s June 20 decision granting IYO a temporary restraining order, leading OpenAI to remove promotional materials about the Io partnership from its website.
