Nintendo’s Win in Wii Controller Patent Case Affirmed

A Texas federal court ruling that found part of an iLife Technologies Inc. patent invalid and saved Nintendo of America Inc. from a $10 million infringement verdict was affirmed by the Federal Circuit on Wednesday.

iLife sued Nintendo in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Texas for infringing U.S. Patent No. 6,864,796, covering “a system for evaluating body movement relative to an environment” using a sensor that detects two types of acceleration. A jury found Nintendo’s motion-detecting Wii controllers infringed and awarded iLife $10.1 million.
