Meta Convinces Judge to Toss Metabyte Suit Over Company Name (1)

Meta Platforms Inc. convinced a federal judge to jettison a trademark infringement suit brought by technology services company Metabyte Inc. because it failed to show consumers were confusing the company with the tech behemoth.

Judge Vince Chhabria said Metabyte presented no evidence that prospective employees were confused between the two companies or that any confusion hurt its business, granting Meta summary judgment and saying it was “not a close call” in a 2-page-long order.

Metabyte sued Meta in September 2023, saying the difference between the two companies’ names after Facebook rebranded itself would likely confuse the public.
