Led Zeppelin guitarist Jimmy Page settled a lawsuit accusing him of failing to credit and compensate the songwriter of “Dazed and Confused” for the song’s use in a documentary released this year.
Jake Holmes, who sued Page and others in May over the inclusion of the song in the film “Becoming Led Zeppelin,” notified the US District Court for the Central District of California of the settlement Aug. 1. Details of the settlement weren’t immediately available, and counsel for Holmes declined to comment through an attorney. Contact information for Page wasn’t readily available.
Holmes wrote “Dazed and Confused” in 1967, and Page’s then-band the Yardbirds began playing it the next year, Holmes said in his lawsuit. Led Zeppelin’s 1969 self-titled debut album included its rendition of “Dazed and Confused,” with Page credited as the songwriter, the suit said. Holmes sued in 2010, and the parties settled the following year.
That settlement agreement requires Page and other defendants to “acknowledge that they have no claim whatsoever” to Holmes’ song, to which Holmes has “complete ownership,” according to the complaint. But Page, Warner Chappell Music Corp., and other defendants have released and exploited several Yardbirds live and studio-recorded performances of the song without paying royalties, Holmes alleged.
They further willfully infringed by using the song—iterations by both the Yardbirds and Led Zeppelin—in the 2025 documentary, Holmes alleged. The film credits the Yardbirds performance of “Dazed and Confused” as “Written by Jimmy Page,” and the Led Zeppelin performance as “Written by Jimmy Page, inspired by Jake Holmes,” the suit said.
The suit also named the film’s distributor Sony Pictures Classics Inc. and record label Warner Chappell, which didn’t respond to a request for comment on the settlement.
Daniel A. Johnson PC of Calabasas, Calif., represents Holmes. No attorneys entered an appearance on behalf of any defendants.
The case is Holmes v. Page, C.D. Cal., No. 2:25-cv-03977, notice of settlement filed 8/1/25.
