Amazon Convinces Judge to Toss Patent Suit Over Alexa, Echo Tech

Amazon.com Inc. convinced a federal judge to throw out a lawsuit accusing it of infringing a trio of patents for voice control technology with its Amazon Echo and Alexa products.

SoundClear Technologies LLC’s patents are invalid under federal law because they are abstract ideas that aren’t innovative, Judge Anthony J. Trenga said in an order filed Nov. 8 in the US District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia.

SoundClear sued Amazon in July, accusing it of infringing US Patent Nos. 11,069,337, 11,244,675, and 9,223,487. Amazon filed a motion to dismiss the suit on Sept. 13.
