California’s TikTok Ban Bill Moves Ahead With Stronger Language

California’s bill that would prohibit TikTok and other high-risk apps on state government devices (S.B. 74) was approved with a more stringent framework by an Assembly committee on Wednesday.

The legislation, authored by state Sen. Bill Dodd (D), follows other states and the federal government in banning the popular social media app for perceived security risks associated with possible Chinese government access to user data from the company’s Beijing-headquartered parent company ByteDance Ltd. Across the nation, bans of the app have sparked debate and litigation over data security and free speech.
