NL Industries to Pay $56 Million for N.J. Lead Dump Site Cleanup

NL Industries Inc. agreed Monday to pay the federal government $56.1 million to reimburse it for cleanup costs incurred at a Superfund site in Middlesex County, N.J.

The lead smelting company will pay on behalf of itself and nearly two dozen companies accused of dumping lead, battery casings, and other waste at the Raritan Bay Slag Superfund Site, according to a consent decree filed in the US District Court for the District of New Jersey.
