A DC Circuit panel upheld Biden-era Energy Department efficiency standards for gas-fired residential furnaces and commercial water heaters.
“Overall, we find that DOE’s economic justification analysis and conclusions were robust,” the US Court of Appeals for the DC Circuit said Tuesday.
The decision preserves the status quo for how the Department of Energy enforces energy efficiency improvements for furnaces and water heaters. The agency updated its standards for these products between December 2021 and 2023 to ensure they run at 95% efficiency and use condensing-model designs to heat water.
