San Franciscans Laid Off During Virus Would Get Rehire Rights

Thousands of San Franciscans laid off because businesses closed during the coronavirus pandemic would get first rights to be rehired under an ordinance the San Francisco Board of Supervisors passed Tuesday.

Supervisors voted 10-1 to send the Chamber of Commerce-approved ordinance to Mayor London Breed for her consideration. If she signs it, the ordinance would take effect immediately and last for 60 days or until the city’s open-ended shelter-in-place order is repealed.

Restaurants, retailers, hotels, catering companies, and car dealerships were among employers that laid off workers starting Feb. 25 when the city declared a public health emergency. Reductions accelerated when the shelter-in-place order kicked in March 17.
