N.C. Governor Vetoes Bill to End Expanded Jobless Aid Early

North Carolina won’t join the 26 states ending expanded federal unemployment benefits earlier than expected, after Gov. Roy Cooper (D) vetoed legislation to cut off the aid boost.

The legislation would have ended the federal supplement of $300 per week within 30 days—or about a month earlier than the September cutoff date Congress set for the program. The state’s Republican-majority legislature passed the bill last month, looking to follow the lead of other states ending federal jobless aid early to push unemployed people back to work.
