Iowa would loosen its child labor laws to extend the hours that minors can work, limit business liability for an underage worker’s injuries, and let teenage apprentices into previously off-limits jobs under legislation heading to Gov. Kim Reynolds’ desk.

The bill (SF 542), which cleared the state legislature Wednesday, is a pared-down version of legislation introduced earlier this year that would have let state officials waive nearly any of Iowa’s work restrictions for 14- to 17-year-olds as part of a training or apprenticeship.
