Bipartisan Bill Would End Subminimum Pay for Disabled Workers

A proposal to eliminate a subminimum wage for workers with disabilities will once again be introduced as early as Thursday in the U.S. Senate, for the first time with bipartisan backing.

The bill will include new language ensuring that employees aren’t left without jobs during the transition.

Sens. Bob Casey (D-Penn.) and Steve Daines (R-Mont.) are sponsoring the bill called the “Transformation to Competitive Integrated Employment Act.” A version has already been introduced in the House. More than 43,000 workers in the U.S. are paid less than the federal minimum wage solely because they have a disability.
