Artificial intelligence researchers in New York will get access to a supercomputer funded by taxpayers with state lawmakers getting oversight over its finances and governance.
State lawmakers passed the proposal (AB 8808C) Thursday as part of a $237 billion state budget.
Gov. Kathy Hochul (D) has touted the idea of New York challenging California’s dominance in developing the technology through a $400 million Empire AI partnership between universities, philanthropists, and the state. The state Senate successfully pushed for legislative oversight over the project after Hochul requested roughly $250 million in state funding in her draft budget.
