Elected leaders in New York and New Jersey are pitching their states this year as emerging centers of artificial intelligence, as a growing number of governors eye the economic opportunities of a technology where California still leads the nation.

“I propose nothing short of making New York the global leader in AI research and development,” New York Gov. Kathy Hochul (D) said in a Jan. 9 State of the State speech where she announced a new partnership between state government and universities alongside guidelines for state agencies to use the tech to promote job growth in the Empire State.
