Mondelez BelVita $8 Million Class Deal Gets Initial Green Light

BelVita consumers secured a California federal court’s early approval of an $8 million class settlement resolving allegations that Mondelez International Inc. deceptively portrayed the breakfast biscuits as healthy despite a high sugar content.

Patrick McMorrow, Marco Ohlin, and Melody DiGregorio challenged statements that belVita products would provide “nutritious sustained energy,” and similar phrases.

In addition to paying $8 million, Mondelez agreed to stop using the word “nutritious” and certain synonyms to describe belVita products if more than 10% of their calories come from added sugar.

New York and California consumers won class certification in March.
