July 15, 2024, 11:00 AM UTC

Welcome to Bloomberg Law’s Wake Up Call, a daily rundown of the top news for lawyers, law firms, and in-house counsel.

  • Orlando personal injury lawyer Dan Newlin has launched a “million dollar-plus” ad campaign consisting of more than 100 electronic billboards in Florida, Wisconsin, Pennsylvania and Nevada, which alternate between pro-Trump messages and ads for Dan Newlin Injury Attorneys. Newlin said it’s “an incredible honor” to be part of an endeavor “that will go down in history as a testament to the power of patriotism and the American spirit.” (Tampa Bay Times)
  • Attrition rates within Big Law firms show “a disturbing trend” for its junior attorneys, says Wayne Stacy, executive director of the Berkeley Center for Law & Technology. “The deck is stacked against women and attorneys of color,” he says. “Big Law aggressively advertises its commitment to diversity, yet it allows a shockingly biased system to determine which junior attorneys survive their up-or-out employment model.” (Law.com)
  • “Elite” law firm Latham & Watkins has been retained by AI music companies Suno and Udio to defend against suits filed by major labels Sony Music, Warner Music Group and Universal Music Group. Latham already played “a key role” in AI-focused cases, including its defense of Anthropic against allegations of infringement brought by UMG, Concord Music Group and ABKCO last October. (Billboard)
  • Justin Fitzdam has been appointed general counsel to Allia Group, a legal finance firm that specializes in healthcare insurer disputes. Fitzdam, a litigator, earlier in his career worked for Sullivan & Cromwell before moving to Boise Schiller Flexner. (Legal Funding Journal)
