A lawsuit brought by members of UCLA’s pro-Palestine encampment that ended in hundreds of arrests alleging the university failed to protect their speech rights will likely move forward after a Wednesday hearing in Los Angeles state court.
Judge Samantha P. Jessner puzzled over how to draw the line between protected speech and criminal activity, in light of the school’s arguments that ordering the clearance of the encampment, that included student arrests and student discipline was justified by the protesters’ violation of lodging law and failure to disperse.
