Massachusetts Challenges Steward Health on Malpractice Coverage

Massachusetts’ attorney general urged a bankruptcy court to require Steward Health Care System LLC to maintain adequate workers’ compensation and medical malpractice insurance coverage as it sells off its hospitals in bankruptcy.

The state highlighted what it said are “serious issues concerning the availability and adequacy of insurance coverage” in a motion filed Monday in the US Bankruptcy Court for the Southern District of Texas.

The coverage is required despite the not-for-profit health system’s recent sale of some of its Bay State hospitals to new owners, Massachusetts Attorney General Andrea Joy Campbell said in the filing. Steward is required to ...
