Steward Wins Court Approval to Sell Massachusetts Hospitals

Bankrupt health system Steward Health Care won court approval for the sale of its six Massachusetts hospitals, transactions that were facilitated by a government lifeline.

  • Judge Christopher Lopez said Wednesday he’d approve the transactions over the objection of Steward’s lenders, which said the company was unloading the hospitals without receiving monetary consideration
    • Steward said in court papers that the company won’t receive “net proceeds” from the sales, however, the deals will allow the hospitals to continue operating
    • The buyers include Boston Medical Center, Lawrence General Hospital and Lifespan, according to court documents
