Bankrupt NHL player Evander Kane may shield from his creditors only $170,350 of equity in his $3 million San Jose, Calif., home, a judge ruled.

Judge Stephen L. Johnson’s July 9 order responds to Zions Bancorporation NA’s motion to reject Kane’s request to protect $600,000 under California’s homestead exemption law. The exemption protects a certain amount of a bankrupt debtor’s home equity from creditors’ reach.
