New York Gov. Kathy Hochul (D) is proposing legislation to expand state protections against AI-made deepfakes following a series of incidents involving high-profile fakes of pop star Taylor Swift, actor Tom Hanks, President Joe Biden, and others.
The push includes a “new private right of action for the publication of false digitally altered material,” according to a press release.
People who use other people’s voices in “advertising or trade” would also face a misdemeanor charge under the proposal following an incident involving Hanks.
