A West Virginia federal judge has indefinitely blocked the National Collegiate Athletic Association from enforcing a controversial rule that restricts some student athletes from competing if they transfer between Division I schools.
Judge John Preston Bailey of the US District Court for the Northern District of West Virginia on Monday imposed a preliminary injunction on the transfer rule until a final trial and decision on the merits of the case. The judge last week had imposed a two-week restraining order to stop NCAA from enforcing the rule, which seven states had argued harms competition and their athletes.
