Raleigh Man Convicted of Defacing Degas Exhibit in Washington

Timothy Martin, of Raleigh, N.C., was found guilty by a federal jury for defacing an art exhibit at the National Gallery of Art in Washington, causing over $4,000 in damage and resulting in the exhibit being removed from public display for 10 days, the Justice Department said Tuesday.

Martin and co-defendant Johanna Smith, 54, of Brooklyn, NY, smeared paint on the case and base of Edgar Degas’ “Little Dancer, Age Fourteen” sculpture as part of a conspiracy by a group called Declare Emergency.
