Procter & Gamble, Unilever Fined $457M Over Laundry Detergent Price-Fixing in EU

BRUSSELS—The European Union antitrust authority imposed $457 million in fines on two of the world’s leading food and consumer product companies April 13 in a settlement with Unilever and Procter & Gamble over a laundry detergent cartel in eight European Union member states.

Both Fortune 500 companies admitted to participating in the price-fixing scheme from 2002 to 2005 after the German company Henkel, which also participated in the cartel, turned whistleblower by confessing to the EU antitrust authority. Henkel officials said evidence of the cartel surfaced during an internal audit.
