Murders in Quiet Neighborhood Shatter Mexico City’s Calm (1)

In the vast swaths of Mexico controlled by drug cartels, public executions and mass graves have long been the norm. Mexico City has largely been a haven from the goriest headlines.

That changed Tuesday morning, when two close aides to Mexico City Mayor Clara Brugada were shot and killed in a targeted attack at a main thoroughfare in an otherwise quiet residential neighborhood. While it wasn’t clear who was behind the shooting, the close range at which the two aides were shot leaves little doubt that professionals were involved.
